Veteran In Crisis

Don't Wait Give Us A Call. 800-273-8255 and press 1

If you are a Veteran in crisis or concerned about one, connect with our caring, qualified responders for confidential help. Many of them are Veterans themselves.

Decisions

In a given day, it’s estimated that the average person makes more than 35,000 decisions. Each of these choices, large or small, has the chance to have a tremendous impact on our lives. This PSA highlights the importance of these decisions, reinforcing the idea that Veterans have the strength to reach out for support.

The Veterans Crisis Line 2020

The Veterans Crisis line is here for you in times of need — answering your calls, chats, and texts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Go behind the scenes to meet the people behind the crisis line, and see what motivates them to make a difference.

“After the Call” offers a glimpse into the lifesaving work of five Suicide Prevention Coordinators (SPCs) — who share their real stories about the work they do every day to support Veterans and their loved ones. Veterans are referred to SPCs through either the Veterans Crisis Line or VA Medical Centers for help navigating VA’s network of care. Veterans dealing with mental health conditions and difficult life events and experiences can call on any of the 300 SPCs nationwide to get connected with the most appropriate treatment and support plan.    VA has built the Nation’s largest, most comprehensive mental health care and suicide prevention program to end Veteran suicide. This integrated effort connects Veterans and their families with services and support across VA through VA Medical Centers, Vet Centers, outpatient clinics, and SPCs. Learn more about the resources available to Veterans and Service members in crisis, and their friends and families, at VeteransCrisisLine.net.

Talking About It Matters

Families and friends play a big role in helping Veterans through challenges. “Talking About It Matters” shows how asking the hard questions can be the first step toward Veterans’ getting support.

How do I locate a buddy whom I served with in the military?

VA can, however, forward a message from you to the Veteran, providing VA has a current address on record.  Write your message to your friend and place it in an unsealed, stamped envelope.   If you have questions, you may call VA at 1-800-827-1000.

Examples Of Discrimination Against Veterans

With over 20 million veterans in the United States, you may be one who is experiencing, or has experienced, the many ways in which discrimination can impact a veteran’s well being and employment status. Here are some examples of what veteran discrimination might look like:

  • “I’m sorry, but that position is not available”: When a position, like a promotion, is listed on an internal job board and it is suddenly out of reach when a veteran tries to apply for it. That could be an example of veteran discriminatory practices. Another way this occurs is during an interview when a disabled veteran has gotten to the first steps of the process, but indicators during the interview seem to present systemic challenges. The latter of the two is the hardest to prove in an EEOC filing.
  • “I don’t hire veterans”: This phrase embodies the bias of overt discrimination. In a case like this, the employer isn’t even trying to hide their improper practices. Perhaps, they are not knowledgeable about discrimination, or they simply don’t care or don’t think you have any recourse. While this kind of reaction is rare, it can occur and certainly qualifies as a discriminatory hiring practice under the law.
  • “I’m sorry, but you won’t be receiving the raise we discussed”: Employers can’t take away benefits that impact veterans like vacation days and sick time, or annual raises or opportunities for promotion. An employer may try something that strips you of your pension or other important long-term benefits in some cases.
  • “I just think your PTSD means you aren’t cut out for the role”: Employers are not allowed to judge candidates based on medical conditions. They may only ask them if they need accommodation and what kind of accommodation they need.
